Interior Design and Home Furnishings

Salt Lake City Living Room

It all started when...

SCDS (Scott Cornelius Design Studio) Ltd. was founded in 2004 as a commercial outlet for the product design work of Scott Cornelius Architect, PC, a design firm specializing in custom residential and resort work. Mr. Cornelius received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from North Carolina State University located in Raleigh N.C. after which he moved to New York City to begin his Architectural and Design career. Mr. Cornelius was a Senior Designer for Alan Wanzenberg and the late Jed Johnson for eleven years before founding his own Architectural practice in 1998.

SCDS Ltd. represents more than twenty-five years of experience designing and working with craftsman developing and producing bespoke furniture, lamps, lighting, rugs, textiles, and accessories. It was established on the premise that original contemporary, modern designed home furnishings could be produced by artisan craftsman: keeping our domestic crafts traditions alive and current in our more mass-produced disposable world. We hope all our Products last for generations to come. Many of the artisans we work with are carrying on family traditions several generations old and craft-traditions rarely commercially available today. The materials used are of the highest quality and are appropriately sourced to maintain sustainability for the future whether working with suppliers to encourage proper forest management or using salvaged, recycled, or repurposed materials. The furniture and lighting are handmade by artisans from rare hardwoods, natural minerals or materials and semi-precious stones. Ceramic vessels for lamps are hand thrown, or formed by studio potters in the US. Metalwork for the line is wrought by traditional Blacksmiths and Silversmiths both in the US and UK. Glass shades and components are mouth-blown by glass artisans: all helping to maintain and build on our existing crafts traditions: hopefully keeping these traditions alive not just for today, but into the future.

All our products are original designs not copies or reinterpretations of existing historical objects. The designs are by there use of traditional handcrafted joinery and natural materials: intended to blend into traditional as well as contemporary interiors. All of our products are produced in small batches keeping with the nature of traditional craft production to maintain the highest quality of artistry and craftsmanship allowing the hand of the artisan to show through in the final finished product: producing a unique "one-of-a-kind" quality to each of our products.

The aesthetics of the firm and its Principals are modern, but deeply rooted in the Arts and Crafts philosophy and tradition of America and Britain with a deep respect for natural materials and traditional craftsman. We pride ourselves on sourcing all our products from small craftsman, or artisan-owned workshops, not sweatshops. We make sure that everyone involved in the production of our products is employed in decent working conditions and is decently paid for their work. We believe that this respect for the value of labour is reflected in the quality and detail of our final products.

We hope that the designs speak for themselves.
